Just North of Seattle, a short drive and ferry ride to south Whidbey Island, is a wonderful little parkland called Earth Sanctuary.
Chuck Pettis, the founder of Earth sanctuary, wanted to create a space where people, nature and spirituality can co-exist.
The mission of the park is to combine "exemplary ecology with art and spirit to create a sanctuary for birds and wildlife and a peaceful place for personal renewal and spiritual connection."
The Cottonwood Stone Circle is our own little Stonehenge here in Washington. Twelve columns of basalt, averaging 11 feet high, form a circle surrounded by timber.
I have taken my shamanic drums with me and played there in the circle; an incredibly powerful experience!
One of my most moving experiences, however, was in a structure called a dolmen.
"Earth Sanctuary's dolmen is intended to serve as a meditation room, within which, surrounded by the strong vibrations of the lichen-covered Montana sandstone, you can center yourself and discover an intense, unmistakable connection with the earth."
Imagine a small phone booth made out of stone. People come there and offer prayers, crystals, stones and trinkets in memory of other people, pets, places and events.
Each time I have meditated in the dolmen, it's been a very grounded yet energetic experience, as if my prayers were being combined with the thousands of others spoken and thought there.
Within the park are two Tibet-Tech Prayer Wheels that issue thousands of prayers to the Universe with each revolution.
Throughout Earth Sanctuary are cairns, small stacks of stones. These traditionally mark important trails or holy places. I look for opportunities to build my own cairns while there, adding crystals and stones that I have brought with me. Each cairn I leave is in memory of some important person/teacher in my life!
This is an amazing little place in our state that should not be missed. Take some small stones and crystals with you to leave as an offering, and prepare to feel the energy of this space!
